New Honorary Members

By Mark Garrod

Clause 6 in Rule 10 of our Constitution allows the Committee “the power to elect as an Honorary Member any person who has rendered eminent service to the cause of mountaineering or assistance to the club.”

The 2012 Committee were delighted to announce, at the club’s annual dinner in October, the election of two new Honorary Members. Apologies for the late notification to the wider membership of this – I missed the last newsletter deadline.

Jim Gregson
Jim joined the club back in 1971, and quickly got himself involved in various committee roles, culminating in his presidency in 1990-91. As a lot of members will testify, Jim has organised a lot of highly varied and entertaining meets over the years, some of them at breakneck speed! In Jim’s recent FRCC committee position, he has also promoted and strengthened the kindred club link with the FRCC.

Jim’s love of the wild (and cold) outdoors has taken him and Sandy on numerous trips to Greenland, to the extent that he has become an authority on exploration of uncharted areas and unclimbed mountains. This culminated in 2012 with the publication of Jim’s book “Exploring Greenland”, coupled with a number of speaking engagements around the country.

Colin Maddison
Colin is mere club youngster compared to Jim, having joined in 1986, but since then, he has been at the heart of a lot of the club’s activities, having been hut manager for 4 years, club treasurer for 6 years, and president in 1992-93. Colin also effectively led the club in its 50th year, being vice-president that year when founding member Len Stubbs was president.

Colin is passionate about keeping the club active, and also promotion of Ty Powdwr for club activities. Colin jointly initiated both the annual Alps trip (with Duncan) and the Norway / Rjukan trip (with Craig), and regularly leads meets based at Ty Powdwr and elsewhere. Colin had also put himself forward for a second term of presidency (our first ever second-term president) when elected Honorary member.

Our congratulations to both Jim and Colin.
