The Club Hut - Ty Powdwr

Ty Powdwr - North Wales

The KMC owns a superb Mountain Hut in Snowdonia. Accommodation is available for use, not just to club members, but also other mountaineering clubs, schools and other genuine educational establishments or similar groups and some family groups.

Situation

Located near the village of Dinorwic, next to the Padarn Country Park, there are views from round the Hut towards Snowdon, over Llanberis and out to Anglesey. Ty Powdwr is within 25 minute walking distance of Llanberis down through Padarn Park and is 20 minutes (by car) from Bangor or Caernarfon, and the Ogwen valley is a just 20 minute drive over the hill. All the major climbing and walking areas in Snowdonia are easily within 1 hour’s drive. Outside the NP boundary but still within an hour the A55 sport climbing is accessible as are the cliffs at Gogarth and the adventurous routes on the Llyen as well as Tremadog and many other areas.

Access

Ty Powdwr is accessed via a well maintained private track. The hut is secure as is the parking.

Accommodation

Ty Powdwr is better equipped than a typical bunk-house, offering hostel-style accommodation. Group bookings can be made for up to 25 people in three dormitories. Families, where at least one adult is a member of a BMC affiliated club with children can book whole dormitories. A fourth dormitory is always reserved for use by Karabiner Mountaineering Club members, who can use the Hut at any time.

Facilities

There is a large well equipped kitchen, with excellent gas cooking facilities (20 rings plus two ovens). The kitchen will easily seat 25 for dinner and with some careful table rearrangement we have managed 35. There is an extremely comfortable lounge with gas fire and an extensive reading library with many guidebooks. There are separate male and female wash-rooms, both with hot showers and an effective drying room. Ty Powdwr has more outside space than almost any other hut in Snowdonia with nearly an acre of extensive paddock and woodland, in which guests may camp if they wish rather than using the dorms.

Activities

Walking (high and low level), Climbing, Running, Mountain Biking, Canoeing, Museums, Steam Trains and more. The Slate quarries which are just ten-minutes’ walk away, have over 1500 sport, trad and adventure routes and have recently been designated a UNESCO world heritage site.
