News of Old Club members
By Iain McCallum
Tony Taylor, a member from 1946 to 1973, died earlier this year. Tony was a keen climber, leading meets at Shining Clough, Kinder Edges, Cloggy, Cratcliffe and Bowfell. He was also a strong walker. With Maurice Wyche he walked the Welsh 3000’s in 1956 and he walked them again in 1959. In 1960 along with Ken Beetham and Len Stubbs, Tony successfully tackled the South Wales Twenty Fives – covering 38 miles with 11,000 feet of ascent.
I recall climbing Tennis Shoe on Idwal Slabs with Tony. Observing me using slings for protection he told me that I was bringing down the climb’s grade! How times have changed.
Teddy Wood who sadly passed away in December was a member from 1948 to 1953. Teddy was the widow of Cliff Wood, a founder member of the Club. Latterly she was the partner of Tony Taylor.
Harry Parker, a member from 1945 to 1954, has also passed away. He was the Club’s Chairmen in 1945/46. He represented the Club on the BMC in 1949/1950.
*In 1952 the Club decided to resign from the BMC for the following reasons: 1.The subscription to the BMC could be better used directly for the benefit of our members; 2. The BMC’s constitution was undemocratic; 3. London was an unsatisfactory centre for the BMC. *50th Anniversary Journal
