Nuts! What are they Roger?
By Alan (L) Jones
I do remember Scout Crag routes 1 & 2 more clearly than the Welsh 3000s because they were my first lead (with the Cleveland Club before I went to Manchester). Having just climbed my first Severe, Evening Wall on Raven Crag, my partner decided that it was time for me to have a go at the sharp end and pointed me at Scout Crag route 1 (or was it 2 we did first). They were graded Diff in those days and we did not have any gear, so the question of protection did not arise until the belays. We were however ‘modern’ climbers as we had a nylon rope (hawser laid) rather than hemp and we had vibram soles on our boots rather than tricounis. It appears that it is not just equipment hat has changed over the years, but the crag as well. Roger's description of these routes bears no relation to my old guide book.
