Out On The Ice Again

By Jim Gregson

Jim and Sandy Gregson went on another expedition to NE Greenland in May/June of this year. They returned to Paul Stern Land, N70 W29, where they had been in 2008, to make a number of first ascents and also a couple of attempts spoiled by poor conditions. The photos give some idea of what it was like. The big pointy peak is called Arken (The Ark) - we got near to the top but ran into an area of dangerous crevasses that stopped us. The other big peak is Baendelbjerg, 2341m - Jim and another friend climbed this by Cloudspotter's Ridge at D/Dsup. with a notable crux rock pitch at V/V+ led by Jim in crampons and bare hands. The 900m route took a 15hour round trip.

Fancy an expedition yourself? Jim is already working on plans for 2011 - a similar expedition to an area further north, plus a trekking trip through a gigantic canyon on Milne Land.
