Climbing at Carnedd y Filiast

Saturday 11th November 2023

The promised sunshine looked at risk at the hotel with light drizzle in Llanberis however two groups of stalwarts made their way to Carnedd y Filiast, with Jared Kitchen, Emily Thompson, Michelle Harrison and Stuart Hurworth heading for Left Edge VD approaching from the Llanberis side whilst the larger group of Colin Maddison, Craig Marsden, Phoebe Marsden, Roger and Bridget Mapleson, David Rainsbury made their way up ‘the Ridge’ M/SG3 approaching from the Nant Francon valley & Andy Pierce ploughing his own furrow.

The day remained dry and good fun was had by all.

I managed to let indecision reign and took enough gear up to lay siege, I should have looked how far the walk in was! Suffice it was a rather heavy pack to haul up the ridge along with expecting cooler weather… the buffalo was a poor choice of gear.. I almost passed out on the way up out of heat exhaustion.

Moel Eilio Circuit:
Present: Christine Beeston, Neil Boynton, Mark Garrod, Michelle Harvie, Sheena Hendrie, Sue Marsden & Cathy Gordon.

The walkers led by Christine departed at 10:30 prompt starting the walk in glorious sunshine and making their way up to the waterfall as a start point to an anti-clockwise circuit of Moel Eilio. Great vista towards the coast and Holyhead mountain until the summit of Moel Eilio and the cloud came down.

After Foel Grach the clouds cleared and Snowden could be seen with its throngs of people crowding the summit whilst Moel Eilio was deserted.

A good leg stretcher of 15km followed on by the ubiquitous KMC café visit.

Various other teams went for walks in and around llanberis, with Catherine and Marcus heading up around Elidir Fawr / Y Garn area

The Dinner

40 members and guests assembled for our 79th Annual Dinner, it was good to be back at the Royal Vic and fantastic to see so many out in the hills, we had 2 groups tackling Carnedd y Filiast, a Moel Eilio circuit, Elidr Fawr and many others.

Our guest speaker this year was Bill Deakin an ex member from the 60’s. Bill gave an entertaining talk crediting some of his contemporary’s from the KMC ensuring that he returned from a winter foray into Coire An T’Sneachda… its amazing what a few prods with an axe will do to keep hypothermia at bay.

This year’s raffle was to be dedicated to Climbers Against Cancer (CAC), Bill had brought along some merch as prizes and that along with donations from KMCers so us raise a fantastic £255 in the raffle we also had a table selling T shirts and sweatshirts which managed to raise a massive £290 bring the grand total for CAC to £545. A fantastic effort for a great cause.

We secured a room to retire to post dinner, which worked out very well, where the fantastic quiz setting abilities of Colin and Mary were demonstrated again – thanks go to both for an excellent quiz.

Sunday 12th of November

Was rather a wash out which saw much retail therapy and a few hardy souls braving the weather.

That’s all folks – thank you all for coming and making the KMC Annual Dinner a great success - see you at the 80th celebration next year.
