Now Cancelled (13-09-18)

Le Tour du Yr Wyddfa

Introduction:

This Septembers walking meet is the le Tour du Yr Wyddfa. On the 15-16 of September 2018, a KMC team will circumnavigate Mount Snowdon in North Wales in a full two day expedition. We will travel off the paths across the lesser travelled slopes, and wild camp on the mountain to see the stars in natural darkness. I hope you will all consider coming.

Details:

The weekend will begin on Friday evening at Ty Powdwr where we will meet for food, drink and catching up. The next day will begin with a good breakfast before we set out on foot to Llanberis to catch the Sherpa bus to Pen y pass. From here, the route will briefly follow the Miners track until we break across open access land and ascend Gallt y Wenallt. We will then traverse the southern slopes and descend into Cwm Llan, where we will camp on the flat grassland beside the river above the falls.

The following day we will ascend to Bwelch Cwm Llan to the west, and navigate the rough and complex south western slopes of Snowdon into Cwm Clogwyn. Here we will see the mighty Llechog, one of the best but least visited crags in Wales, before walking northwest down the cwm to Llyn Ffynnon-y-gwas. We will then ascend Bwelch Cwm Brawnynog into Cwm Brawnynog itself, and walk down the cwm to meet the Llanberis path just below the halfway station. From here easy walking leads back to Llanberis for a cool drink, and then back to Ty Powdwr for tea.

Notes for participants:

  1. This local expedition is a wonderful way to enjoy Yr Wyddfa and the highest mountain range in north wales. I hope you all consider coming, however, we will be camping in a popular wild camping location so reduce our impact I must limit numbers to 8 participants.

  2. The walk is more than 20Km long and 2/3 of the distance is off paths on some steep and often rugged ground. While no technical or objectively dangerous ground will be encountered, some experience of walking off track on rugged terrain is advised, and the equipment to do so essential.

  3. 2/3 of the total distance is covered on the second day. While we will return to Ty Powdwr at a reasonable hour, it is a full day of walking.

  4. There is a kit list for this meet. Please contact the meet leader for details.
