Yorkshire Hike

Meirion Tanner

Members: Kate Harvey, Meirion Tanner
Guest: Pete Attwood

A rainy start was neatly evaded by some critical road closures, so the party was able to set off in sunshine and wander around Digley reservoir before heading across country to the welcome public toilets in Holme village where it was able to contemplate lunch and watch people drink pints of beer at the Fleece Inn.

Intrepidly, the expedition set out again to cross the valley floor and take a roundabout route to Yateholme reservoir. Lunch was taken at the top of the dam wall where Pete demonstrated a natural climbing ability by scaling the dam wall, bested only by Kate’s rescue of a stray piece of olive bread from a watery grave.

Encountering numerous off- (and on-) road vehicles, the walk continued to Riding Wood reservoir with a Mediterraneanesq view down to Ramsden reservoir (see photo) and then up through the woods to the edge of the moors.

An abortive attempt to descend through a farmer’s field led us to the road down to Dobb and on to Holmbridge, via the Holmfirth Vineyard where, among other things (wine-tasting presumably), you can get married.

Crossing the main road again in Holmbridge, the hikers returned to Digley reservoir carpark and back home for tea and medals. Thanks to Kate and Pete for a lovely day.

Meet Promo:

**DUE TO NEW RESTRICTIONS IN KIRKLEES, THIS WALK CAN ONLY TAKE PLACE WITH TWO HOUSEHOLDS (I.E. ME, AND ONE OTHER HOUSEHOLD).  IF ANYONE ELSE WOULD LIKE TO COME, A NEW VENUE MAY BE CONSIDERED, DEPENDING ON CONVENIENCE OF THOSE ALREADY SIGNED UP**

This is a half-day walk to ease folk back into meeting again, taking in some lovely countryside in the beautiful Holme Valley.

We’ll depart from Digley Reservoir Car Park (SE110072) at 11am and take a route around the reservoir and over to the village of Holme (where the Fleece Inn can refresh anyone who’s flagging from the first 40 minutes of walking..) and the head down to the valley floor and up onto the south-east slopes, passing by the reservoirs on that side.  Back at the carpark by 3pm latest.
