Yorkshire Limestone

Colin Maddison

Well done and thank you to those that made it to Pot Scar despite a dubious forecast and the absense of the meet leader. Flora has very kindly provided the folowing meet report.

PRESENT: Michelle Harrison, Rory Marsden, Flora Devlin

We arrived in Feizor to dry rock but some ominous looking clouds. Luckily the rain kept off until the moment we set off home at the end of a brilliant day.

The crag is positioned above the little hamlet of Feizor, which has a great tearoom which fuelled us for the day ahead.

There were three of us on the meet - Rory, Michelle and Flora (friend of Michelle).

We climbed very efficiently as a 3 and got 9 routes done:

Payback HS (F); Cannabis VS (R);Addiction VS (4c); Morts Crack HVS (5a); Equity S (4a); Overdose VS (4c); The Pusher VS (5a); Boil The Breakfast early VS (4c); Navarna VS (4c).

The routes tended to be cruxy and bold near the bottom - hard pulls protected by tiny slightly dubious wires. The rock quality was mostly great, but a few loose blocks to be mindful of. Really easy belaying with rocks to sling. It was an absolute wind tunnel at the top which made communication a bit tricky but nothing worse than a windy day at Stanage.

We all left buzzing with an amazing day climbing - everyone tried hard, got scared and did at least one celebratory woooop at the top of the crag.

Meet Promo:

It’s been a few years so this year’s Yorkshire Limestone meet will be making a return visit to Pot Scar.

Pot Scar is south facing, quick drying, sheltered and catches any sun that’s going. The crag offers trad climbing with about fifty routes from Diff to E3, with plenty to go at in the VS to E1 range.

The crag is situated above the hamlet of Feizor where an additional major attraction is one of the best cafes in the Dales. It’s an ideal starting point for climbers or for walkers who might like to visit the crag on their travels.

To get there follow the A65 past Settle toward Clapham. About three quarters of a mile beyond a junction with the B6480 and just beyond the Falconry Centre, take a sharp right turn to Feizor. Park in the village (limited) or the farmyard opposite the café for a small fee.

Approach: Take the footpath (opposite the café) eastwards through the farmstead towards Stainforth. Follow the path along a wall for about 300m, over stiles, and go around the FAR side of the final field boundary to pick up a rising path that gains the base of the crag. DO NOT CUT ACROSS THE FIELDS FROM THE FARM.

Grid ref: SD 795678

You can check out the crag at - UKC Logbook - Pot Scar (ukclimbing.com)

Guidebooks: Yorkshire Limestone – YMC (2005), Northern Limestone – Rockfax (2015) or Northern Rock -Wired-Guides (2022)

I will be at the crag by 11.00am latest, so see you there.
