Around Hebden Bridge
Members: Lorna Marsland, Jo Stratford, Andy Stratford, Dave Wylie, Peter McNulty.
Guests: Sheila McNulty, Alan Sumner, David Swindlehurst.
A small but select group gathered at the car park as the clouds lifted to give us a glorious autumn day in the Calder Valley.
The route started with a steep pull up Wadsworth Bank Fields then contouring west passing several properties that had spectacular views over the valley. A short descent to Wood End was followed by a climb to Old Town with its cricket club perched on the hillside. By now the theme of the day had been established with an ascent, followed by a comparatively level section before dropping again to the valley.
Some respite was given on the next section following the river in Hebden Vale to Gibson Mill where we had a brief break.
Yet another ascent took us to Slack from where we immediately descended to Colden Water before taking the Calderdale Way up to Blackshaw Head followed by the long descent to the main road at Eastwood.
The next section began with yet another climb passing terraced gardens and steadily up the hillside until we reached the Pennine Bridleway at Swillington. All that now remained was the long contour to reach the woods on Daisy Bank where a steep descent led back to Mytholmroyd.
All participants enjoyed the walk with its wide variety of footpaths from ancient narrow cobbles, pleasant woodland to wide maintained tracks. Also the weather could not have been better with a warm dry day showing the area at its best..
