Alpine Training Weekender 2025

Are you ready for your summer adventures? The alpine training meet is a weekend meet at Ty Powdwr where everyone can all come together to climb, scramble, hike and practice our skills for the coming season. Everyone is welcome to join in or come and do your own thing. Either way, we'll all be out in the mountains and that is what it’s really all about!

The focus of weekend will be training and revision of skills. Firstly, there will be short skill share events run by our qualified members, and secondly, two alpine training courses from Andy Teasdale a Llamberis based British Mountain Guide.

In addition, we will endeavour to bring out the club BBQ on Saturday evening for a group garden party. Bring your favourite treats for the fire and we’ll cook them up for you!

If you would like to join us please hit the ‘Intend to Attend’ or email the meet leaders directly. Thanks guys, I hope to see you all there.

Skill Shares:

These skill shares are open to everyone for free! Each session is 2 hours long and they will run through the day on Saturday 3rd May. Please let us know in advance if you are interested. Thanks.

  • Belay management for multipitch climbing
  • Revision: Technical mountaineering skills
  • Introduction to avalanche transceivers
  • Problem solving for climbers and mountaineers

Guide Led Alpine Training:

The club is running two guide led alpine skills courses in advance of alpine climbing meets in 2025. The courses are being run by Llanberis based British Mountain Guide, Andy Teasdale, on Sunday 4th and Monday 5th May 2025. The courses are part of KMC alpine weekender but must be booked on separately from the general meet.

Sunday 4th: Glacier Travel and Crevasse Rescue

Approaching alpine summits is often by glacier and the risk of falling into crevasses is real. This course teaches/revises good practice for glacier travel and the rescues systems needed in case the worst should happen. This is an essential course for all those wishing to head out onto glaciated terrain and the topic should be revised before every alpine trip. It is highly advised.

Monday 5th: Self-Rescue for Climbers and Mountaineers

Part of a climber’s skillset is the ability to react swiftly and safely to unexpected problems. As objectives move away from single pitch crags self-rescue or improvised rescue skills are therefore essential because routes become long, remote and objectively more dangerous. If your objectives are on rock or technical mountain terrain, self-rescue is an essential skillset to learn and revise. It is highly advised too!

Both courses guide led courses are subsidised by the KMC grant scheme and are being offered at £40pppd. Initially the courses are open to full and associate members with 6 places available per day. If you would like to book a place, please state what course you would like to attend when signing up or email the meet leader directly

PERSONAL NOTE: £80 for a two full days training in alpine climbing with a British Mountain Guide is a great deal and a great opportunity! Even if you have learned these skills before, coming to revise and ask questions is a valuable learning experience. It is highly recommended!
