Evening Meets at Yellowslacks

Wed 2nd Apr, 2008

Not a good turnout at Yellowslacks, guess the walking-in and navigation put most people off. Al did a lot of bouldering/soloing on the many boulders and buttresses all over the hillside for a few hours, only company being hares which where very obvious as they were in camouflage white. Just as he was about to head home, Andy arrived in time for the two of them to do a HVD (4c!) a little after sunset.

The plan was to meet up at at 6:30pm in Old Glossop, grid ref SK 045 948, to head up as a group 6:45pm. James, Dave and Al set off at the published time. Clear cold night and below freezing, got windy on top. We started the search for the main crag much too early thereby checking out many buttresses and boulders along the hill side which are worthy of another visit, maybe in daylight hours. Two excellent routes and a scramble where done on the Main Crag before heading back to Glossop and the Globe for a swift half and numerous helpings of hotpot.

Wed 24th May, 2006

This crag was originally developed by the KMC, in the early days of the Club. The local farmer didn't like the idea of people climbing there and tried to blow up the crag! Several years later, some members went back and did lots of new routes on the re-shaped outcrop. The farmer then blew it up again. The current routes were put up by climbers who were not from the KMC. Hopefully, now that it is on designated Access Land, it should be safe to climb there without fear of detonation. A fine, though rather cool, evening only tempted three KMCers out to this infrequented crag: Dave Wylie, Mark Ashley and Andy Grantham. In addition, on the way in, Dave encountered Gary Cook who was out for a walk, but not climbing. Dave soloed/bouldered some micro-routes on the craglets on the edge marked as "Yellow Slacks" on the map, before proceeding to the main crag ("Dog Rock", according to the Ordnance Survey). Here he found Mark starting up his first route: Curbstones (V-Diff). Andy and Dave followed him up this. Next, Mark decided to have a go at Mantelshelf Buttress (Hard V-Diff). Perhaps this was a poor choice, as he revealed that he can't actually mantelshelf! Instead, he ended up in the grassy corner off to the left of the lower part of the route. By the time Andy and Dave had also scrambled up this, it was getting late and very cold, so they called it a day. Where was everybody else? Who were the climbers on Shelf Benches on the other side of the valley? Who left the broken vacuum flask littering the craglets? Will anybody turn up at Cow's Mouth Quarry Next Week? Find out, if you can...

Back to Current !!!!

During the spring and summer months evening meets are held outdoors at local crags, usually on Wednesdays, weather permitting. Keep an eye on the scribbles for the latest information. Indoor climbing wall meets start again in the autumn.

Some lucky people may be able to get out climbing nice and early, but this will vary depending on work hours and the traveling distance. Generally you should find KMC climbers at the crag by 6pm and some might still be there after its gone dark.

If you have any questions about coming along to a meet, or if you want to try and arrange car sharing, etc., then just send us an e-mail. For the latest information check the Scribble pages.
